Retainer Services

Comprehensive, Integrated Financial Planning
This comprehensive, integrated service is our preferred way to work with clients. Under this plan, we work with clients to integrate all facets of their financial lives with their goals and values. We believe that this integrated approach is very helpful in establishing a plan that will succeed. We will help clients through the entire process as they review and implement our recommendations. Retainer clients may also attend any seminars on a variety of topics provided by Fraser Financial at no charge (exception: meals and materials charges may apply).

A Typical Engagement
  • Before the Initial Meeting-Clients are asked to complete a detailed questionnaire.
  • Initial Meeting-This usually lasts 1 hour. The initial questionnaire is reviewed, the process is discussed, and the data gathering process begins.
  • Step One
    • Goals and Values Work - Complete various goals and values exercises. This should help the clients determine the desired focus of their lives. The results will be instrumental during the subsequent planning process.
    • Balance Sheet and Cash Flow Statement - We will compile and review these statements, prepared from information provided by the clients, for accuracy.
  • Step Two
    • Introduction to Investments - We begin our work on Investments by assessing the client's risk tolerance. We then prepare an Investment Policy Statement which details how we will proceed with investments for this client based on the results of the risk tolerance test (and the need for "goals funding" as discussed below). Once a clear understanding is reached, we will proceed with investment recommendationsand if approved by the client, the transfer of investment accounts to TD Waterhouse. Fraser Financial will implement approved recommendations and monitor all investments. NOTE: retainer clients may, at their discretion, maintain investment accounts with any brokerage. However, TD Waterhouse, a reputable discount brokerage, provides daily downloads of all investment activity to Fraser Financial, which facilitates record keeping. Clients maintaining accounts elsewhere will be responsible for maintaining all their own records, executing recommendations and providing Fraser Financial with all statements.
    • Goals Funding - Client goals often include financial requirements for retirement funding but may also include weddings, travel, charitable gifting, new homes and cars, education funding, career changes, and many other items that are specific to each client. At this time, we will begin working on a financial plan to assess the ability of current investments and savings to fund such goals.
  • Step Three
    • Tax Planning - We will review the tax returns from past years to determine if any action needs to be taken to reduce taxes. Examples include but are not limited to effective use of unrealized investment losses (coordinated with investment policy), charitable giving of appreciated stock, conversion of traditional IRAs to Roth IRAs, and enhanced record keeping to insure all allowable deductions are taken. With some exceptions, tax preparation is provided for all Retainer Services clients.
    • Estate Planning - We will review all current Estate Planning documents (Wills, Living Wills, Durable Powers of Attorney, Advance Healthcare Directives, and Trusts) to determine if any changes should be considered. If you do not have any of these documents, we will educate you on their importance and encourage you to have them prepared. Attorney referrals are available upon request.
  • Step Four
    • Insurance Review - This will include life insurance, health insurance, disability insurance, property and casualty insurance, liability umbrellas, and long-term care insurance. If deficiencies exist, we will help the client work with their current agent to (re-)write policies. Upon request, we will provide several recommendations for insurance agents that can assist the clients.
  • Step Five
    • Wealth Management Binder - This binder, which includes a recap of all work done in the initial year, is presented to the client
  • As Needed
    • Year-End Tax Planning
    • Education Planning
    • Stock Option Planning
    • Executive Benefits Planning
    • Consumer Issues -- Assistance with major purchases, refinancing, fraud protection, childcare planning and any other issues as requested by the client.
    • Business Planning (Usually done under separate agreement.)
    • Coaching and Support -- This is often the most important thing we do. Even an excellent plan will not succeed without implementation.
Annual Fees for Retainer Services:
  • Individuals-Starting at $2,000
  • Couples-Starting at $2,500
Fees are paid quarterly in advance. Retainer fees are reviewed annually and may increase or decrease, with client approval, depending on the client's situation. In no case will annual retainer fees be less than $1,500 per year. Please also note that the starting fees quoted above may increase substantially for clients with large investment accounts or other complicated issues.
